017: Melbourne's Bubblin' (w Soul)

I've been infatuated the sounds coming out of this South Australian city for a bit now.  Here, I tried to stick to music in the general region of soul, RnB, funk and hip-hop with tinges of electronic, psychedelic and even a speck of folk. Heavy on recordings by affiliates of the 30/70  collective, Hiatus Kaiyote's crew, the Torchlight Commission collective, and a myriad of others making waves. The city has gained musical notoriety in the recent past for funk n' soul artists like The Bamboos in the early 2000's, a jackin' house pulse that definitely still holds a presence, and a prominent alt. rock/folky-punk scene spearheaded by Milk! Records, among others.

Melbourne's grasp of music rooted in funk, soul and hip-hop is mature, but original. It pays homage to greats, without attempting to copy. As put by South London label Rhythm Section Int'l , it's the serious sounds from the 'impossibly fertile Melbourne Scene that is quickly becoming the envy of the world'.  dig it.
